I-Au60 : a Perfect Chiral-Icosahedral Golden Shell

Chiral symmetry breaking, i.e., the spontaneous formation of a chiral-icosahedral shell (I-Au60) from an achiral (Ih) precursor, forms a perfect golden sphere in which all 60 sites are chemically equivalent. The singular rigidity of the I-Au60 manifests in uniquely discrete structural, vibrational, electronic, and optical signatures. It is hoped that this report may serve as a guide to the experimental detection of the I-Au60 and, ultimately, its isolation in material forms.
