Playing Tetris with nanocubes
The optical properties of materials depend on their structure at the nanoscale, as in the wings of butterflies. The precise arrangement of nano-objects on the surface (meta-atoms) allows the realization of materials with properties that do not exist in nature, which we call “metasurfaces”. We have developed a completely bottom-up methodology to arrange colloidal nanoparticles into arbitrarily complex meta-atoms with unprecedented precision. A metasurface that deflects polarized light is fabricated as a proof of concept.
