X-ray nanosensors

We develop fibered X-ray nanosensors for two main applications in Oncology (collaboration with Paoli-Calmettes Institute and CRCM Marseille) and fundamental physics (collaboration with ANL, IL USA). The active part of these sensors is integrated at the tip of a pulled optical fiber. High sensitivity and lateral resolution (20 nm demonstrated) is expected. We also develop a new generation of material characterization tools coupling Scanning Probe Microscopy and X-ray Spectrometry. The general goal is to get simultaneously sample topography and chemical mapping at high lateral resolution.

Engineering and properties of supported lipid layers and their utilization in bio/chemo and ion sensors

Supported lipid layers are very interesting materials with numerous unique intrinsic properties that can be used in the development of sensors: they self-assemble into mono- or by- layers with a thickness of a few nanometers on various substrates; lipids present lateral fluidity in the plane of the layer; they form natural dielectrics.

 

 

  • we chemically engineer lipids and lipid layers to make the layers functional and with high degree of mechanical and dielectric stability
  • we study the formation of lipid layers on inorganic and organic substrates and their  interfaces
  • we develop sensors based on field effect transistor technologies using engineered lipid layers as ultra-thin gate dielectrics

 

 

 

 

Single molecule T-Jump (Thibaudau, Marmri PhD)


Kinetic measurements are among the most important experimental tools for elucidating the mechanisms of biochemical reactions. The sequences and orders of the elementary reaction steps and their dynamics can be deduced from kinetic data and their dependence on experimental conditions or perturbations. A rapid temperature variation (T-Jump, iT-Jump) allows to study many biologically relevant processes or their elementary steps that occur at time scales of microsecond. In recent years, advances in nano-fabrication techniques have enabled the production of nanoscale devices that probe a single molecule present in a solution at concentrations relevant to biology. Such devices have been used to perform single molecule studies of biological processes such as DNA polymerization or protein-protein interaction. However, they are not designed to allow a brief variation in the temperature of the molecule for the study of processes and / or to activate them thermally on a microsecond scale. We are developing an instrument based on nano-devices to produce microsecond temperature flashes and optically analyze a single molecule.
